In anticipation of an exciting new chapter of growth and expansion, we are inviting expressions of interest from professional’s keen to explore future opportunities with our team. Our focus is on attracting Rescue Crew Officers (RCO’s), who are driven by a commitment to service excellence as we enhance our operational capabilities across all our community bases through both fixed and touring positions.

What do our Rescue Crew Officers do?

The Rescue Crew Officer works closely with both the Flight Crew members, and Medical Team, to ensure the safety of the rear cabin during flying operations. The Rescue Crew Officer is also responsible for managing the safety of all personnel and equipment during winching operations. The Rescue Crewman must be confident and competent operating in all aspects of winching including overland/ overwater/ vessel / night.

Key Accountabilities

As an RCO, your key accountabilities are to:

  • Management and safety of the rear cabin during flying operations.
  • Assist both the flight crew and medical crew during operational missions.
  • Ensure the Pilot is promptly advised on all matters affecting the safety, serviceability or effectiveness of the aircraft or the operation.
  • Carry out all duties and training in accordance with the LifeFlight Australia’s Operations Manual.
  • Ensure all required Currency and Recency items are maintained.
  • Adhere to all company policies and procedures.
  • Maintain all Rescue equipment in a serviceable condition.
  • Assist the medical team with equipment and patient handling on medical missions.
  • Undertake and support operational duties during emergencies and disasters as necessary.
  • Ensure the safety of all medical crew, and others, during winch operations.

About You

We are looking for individuals who are seeking their next challenge in the Aviation environment. Along with excellent communication skills, and a keen interest in being part of a team, you will be comfortable offering operational support including administrative and other non-flight tasks.

Roster

The roster requirements will be dependent on position of either Fixed Base or HUB (Multiple bases).

Fixed Base RCO positions: Will work an equal time roster which may consist of 2 day shifts / 2 night shifts / 4 days off, or a standby roster of 7 x 24hr shifts followed by 7 days off. 

HUB RCO positions: Will be required to work at all LifeFlight bases. The roster will be equal time 45 days on / 45 days off, calculated over a 90 day period. (This roster requires flexibility, as this is not an equal time week to week roster).

 Mandatory Requirements

  • Advanced First Aid (HLTAID014)
  • Advanced Resuscitation and Oxygen Therapy (HLTAID015)
  • CASA Aviation Class 2 or Basic Class 2 Medical Certificate
  • Ability to pass the LifeFlight Functionality Assessment (ACO /RS)

Highly Desirable

  • Certificate III in Aviation AVI30519 (Rescue Crew Officer)
  • SLSA Bronze Medallion
  • Undertake Helicopter Aquatic Rescue and Recovery (AVIW0003)
  • Crew Resource Management
  • HUET / EBS Qualified
  • Dangerous Good Awareness
  • Previous / Current RCO experience

Functionality Assessment

The initial Functionality Assessment for RCO’s is set out below. (Components 1 – 5 and 7 – 12)

The applicant has a 2 hour timeframe to complete the below components.

Once qualified as an RCO, the ongoing functionality assessment includes components 1 – 10.

  • Assessment 1 – Abdominal Strength Test – 30 sit-ups under 2 minutes
  • Assessment 2 – Upper Body Strength Test – 20 push-ups under 2 minutes
  • Assessment 3 – Safe lifting techniques – 5 kettlebell deadlifts
  • Assessment 4 – 1km Equipment Transfer (16kg) – under 10 minutes
  • Assessment 5 – 500m Stretcher Carry (16kg) – under 6 minutes
  • Assessment 6 – 400m Swim – under 11 minutes
  • Assessment 7 – 300m Swim full RCO kit – under 10 minutes
  • Assessment 8 – Tread Water full RCO kit – 10 minutes
  • Assessment 9 – 25m Survivor Tow full RCO kit
  • Assessment 10 – Climb out of pool/into a life raft
  • Assessment 11 – 2.4km run – under 12 minutes (initial RCO/RS test)
  • Assessment 12 – 700m Swim – under 20 minutes (initial RCO/RS test)
